Overactive Bladder: A Chinese Medicine Approach

An overactive bladder is the name describing the inability to control urination. There could be an instant urgency that is typically incompletely controllable as soon as you acknowledge the sensation to relieve your bladder. You may have no control or less than adequate control to stop the stream until you are safely over the toilet.
Some common symptoms are:

1. urinary frequency, with or without volume of urine output
2. excessive nighttime urination
3. urine leakage or incontinence
4. weak flow of urine
5. discomfort while urinating
6. patient may or may not have a specific physical trigger, such as giving birth or an enlarged prostate

There are 5 types: Qi, Blood, Damp, Stone, and Fatigue, meaning weakness.
Qi Deficiency is a combination of primal and secondary energy deficiencies called Kidney and Spleen Qi Deficiency.
If leakage is accompanied by a cough the it is mainly Spleen and Lung Qi deficiency.
When emotions and stress are involved it is called Liver Qi stagnation
When the weakness occurs after excessive or chronic bleeding it is Blood Deficiency.
If there is fluid retention or blood in the urine or discomfort while urinating it may be either be infection or kidney stone or both.
